Watching short, animated videos is an\u00a0excellent<\/i>\u00a0way to work on a variety of speech and language skills while simultaneously keeping us engaged and motivated. Some ways these videos can be used to target goals include:<\/p>\n
Main Idea:<\/b>\u00a0After watching the video, kids can identify the\u00a0main idea<\/b>\u00a0or the central point of the story. It can typically be stated in one sentence. In order to figure out the main idea, kids should answer the question, \u201cWhat point is this movie trying to make?<\/b>\u201d<\/p>\n

Summarizing:\u00a0<\/b>In order to summarize the movie, kids must identify the\u00a0characters, setting<\/b>\u00a0(when and where the movie takes place), and the\u00a0sequence of events<\/b>. It also includes the identification of the problem<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0how that problem was solved.<\/b>\u00a0When summarizing the movie, encourage your kids to use transition words, such as\u00a0\u2018first, next, then, last\u2019<\/i>\u00a0etc.<\/p>\n

Predicting:\u00a0<\/b>While watching, frequently pause the video whenever a character is about to make a decision or a problem is introduced. Have kids make a\u00a0prediction<\/b>\u00a0about what might happen next using the phrase, \u201cI predict<\/b>\u00a0______\u00a0because<\/b>\u00a0_____.\u201d<\/p>\n

Problem-Solving:\u00a0<\/b>Watch the video and identify the\u00a0problem<\/b>\u00a0and the\u00a0solution<\/b>. Then, discuss other ways the problem could have been solved as well as the\u00a0pros<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0cons<\/i>\u00a0of each solution. Then, have kids determine which solution they would have chosen and explain\u00a0why<\/i>\u00a0that would be the best choice.<\/p>\n

Grammar\/Sentence Structures:\u00a0<\/b>Periodically pause the video and have kids create a sentence about what they\u2019ve watched by using a\u00a0coordinating conjunction<\/b>\u00a0(and, or, but, so, etc.) or\u00a0subordinating conjunction<\/b>\u00a0(although, until, unless, if, etc.). Another option is to have them come up with each of the following sentence types:\u00a0declarative<\/b>\u00a0(statement),\u00a0interrogative<\/b>\u00a0(question),\u00a0exclamatory<\/b>\u00a0(exclamation!), and\u00a0imperative<\/b>\u00a0(demand).<\/p>\n

Making Inferences:\u00a0<\/b>Ask questions about the movie that require the kids to make an\u00a0inference.\u00a0<\/b>In order to make inferences, kids use\u00a0what they see<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0what they already know<\/b>\u00a0(background knowledge) as evidence for their answer, \u2018why<\/i>\u2019 or \u2018do you think?<\/i>\u2019 and the answer cannot be directly stated or observed in the movie.<\/p>\n

Articulation:\u00a0<\/b>For kids who are practicing their sounds at the\u00a0word<\/b>\u00a0level<\/b>, go on an\u00a0articulation word hunt<\/b>! Whenever kids see an object in the video that contains their sound, they should write it down. For kids who are practicing at the\u00a0sentence level<\/b>, they make a sentence for each word that is written down, and kids who are practicing the sound at the\u00a0conversation level<\/b>\u00a0can either summarize the video or tell their favorite part while keeping data on their productions.<\/p>\n

Perspective-Taking:\u00a0<\/b>As kids watch the video, have them identify the\u00a0thoughts\u00a0<\/b>and\u00a0feelings<\/b>\u00a0of the characters. They should also explain the evidence that shows why the character feels that way using the following sentence frame: \u201cI think (character) feels (emotion) because (evidence)\u201d.\u00a0<\/i>Think about\u00a0body language, facial expressions,<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0make connections<\/b>\u00a0to personal experience.<\/p>\n
