Some ways these videos can be used to target goals include:<\/p>\n<p><b>Main Idea:<\/b>\u00a0After watching the video, kids can identify the\u00a0<b>main idea<\/b>\u00a0or the central point of the story. It can typically be stated in one sentence. In order to figure out the main idea, kids should answer the question, \u201c<b>What point is this movie trying to make?<\/b>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Summarizing:\u00a0<\/b>In order to summarize the movie, kids must identify the\u00a0<b>characters, setting<\/b>\u00a0(when and where the movie takes place), and the\u00a0<b>sequence of events<\/b>. It also includes the identification of the <b>problem<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0<b>how that problem was solved.<\/b>\u00a0When summarizing the movie, encourage your kids to use transition words, such as\u00a0<i>\u2018first, next, then, last\u2019<\/i>\u00a0etc.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Predicting:\u00a0<\/b>While watching, frequently pause the video whenever a character is about to make a decision or a problem is introduced. Have kids make a\u00a0<b>prediction<\/b>\u00a0about what might happen next using the phrase, \u201c<b>I predict<\/b>\u00a0______\u00a0<b>because<\/b>\u00a0_____.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Problem-Solving:\u00a0<\/b>Watch the video and identify the\u00a0<b>problem<\/b>\u00a0and the\u00a0<b>solution<\/b>. Then, discuss other ways the problem could have been solved as well as the\u00a0<i>pros<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>cons<\/i>\u00a0of each solution. Then, have kids determine which solution they would have chosen and explain\u00a0<i>why<\/i>\u00a0that would be the best choice.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Grammar\/Sentence Structures:\u00a0<\/b>Periodically pause the video and have kids create a sentence about what they\u2019ve watched by using a\u00a0<b>coordinating conjunction<\/b>\u00a0(and, or, but, so, etc.) or\u00a0<b>subordinating conjunction<\/b>\u00a0(although, until, unless, if, etc.). Another option is to have them come up with each of the following sentence types:\u00a0<b>declarative<\/b>\u00a0(statement),\u00a0<b>interrogative<\/b>\u00a0(question),\u00a0<b>exclamatory<\/b>\u00a0(exclamation!), and\u00a0<b>imperative<\/b>\u00a0(demand).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Making Inferences:\u00a0<\/b>Ask questions about the movie that require the kids to make an\u00a0<b>inference.\u00a0<\/b>In order to make inferences, kids use\u00a0<b>what they see<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0<b>what they already know<\/b>\u00a0(background knowledge) as evidence for their answer, \u2018<i>why<\/i>\u2019 or \u2018<i>do you think?<\/i>\u2019 and the answer cannot be directly stated or observed in the movie.<\/p>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Articulation:\u00a0<\/b>For kids who are practicing their sounds at the\u00a0<b>word<\/b>\u00a0<b>level<\/b>, go on an\u00a0<b>articulation word hunt<\/b>! Whenever kids see an object in the video that contains their sound, they should write it down. For kids who are practicing at the\u00a0<b>sentence level<\/b>, they make a sentence for each word that is written down, and kids who are practicing the sound at the\u00a0<b>conversation level<\/b>\u00a0can either summarize the video or tell their favorite part while keeping data on their productions.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Perspective-Taking:\u00a0<\/b>As kids watch the video, have them identify the\u00a0<b>thoughts\u00a0<\/b>and\u00a0<b>feelings<\/b>\u00a0of the characters.
