Children who suffer\u00a0 from an anxiety disorder have excessive and persistent\u00a0 worry and terror about everyday situations that exceed\u00a0 normal limits. Frequently, anxiety disorders manifest\u00a0 through episodes of severe anxiety, fear, or terror that\u00a0 reach a peak within minutes \u2014 commonly referred to as\u00a0 panic attacks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"trsubheading\">Reasons kids get stressed<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a child\u2019s life, stress can be a response to any type of\u00a0 unpleasant change that occurs. A child\u2019s sense of safety\u00a0 and security, according to Dr Yaffe, can be badly affected\u00a0 by even the smallest of changes. Worrying about\u00a0 schoolwork or grades, juggling multiple responsibilities\u00a0 such as school, exams, or extra-curricular activities, social\u00a0 difficulties with friends or peers, bullying, starting a new\u00a0 school or moving to a new location, experiencing low\u00a0 self-esteem and negative thoughts about oneself, going\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">through puberty, and physical changes in both boys and\u00a0 girls, are all examples of common stressors for children.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"trsubheading\">Easing anxiety<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following a year of remote learning, Dr Yaffe believes\u00a0 that some children have suffered an emotional, mental,\u00a0 and developmental toll on returning to school full-time.\u00a0 Some youngsters believe they have fallen behind both\u00a0 academically and socially. While some students will be\u00a0 happy to see their classmates and teachers again, others\u00a0 who have been accustomed to online learning may feel\u00a0 overwhelmed in a new social environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr Yaffe\u2019s advice is to keep an eye on your child\u2019s\u00a0 behaviour when they return to school. She suggests\u00a0 paying attention to indicators of despair or anxiety. Some\u00a0 of their symptoms may include being reclusive, having\u00a0 difficulty sleeping, or experiencing abdominal or other\u00a0 bodily pain as a result of this stress. Moreover, students\u00a0 who may have been subjected to cyberbullying while\u00a0 participating in remote learning may face additional\u00a0 stress when participating in school social activities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No matter how your child reacts to attending school in\u00a0 person, encourage open communication by asking them\u00a0 how they are doing. If your children exhibit any signs of\u00a0 depression or anxiety, it is important to acknowledge and\u00a0 validate their feelings. Your encouragement may urge <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">them to remain open and honest with you. At the same <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">time, reassure children that they are safe and that the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">schools are following public health recommendations <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to ensure their safety. You should try to make them feel <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">secure and comfortable, as well as assure them that you <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are doing everything you can to keep them safe.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"trsubheading\">Covid-19 and stress levels<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children may be at a loss for what to do or how to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">process their experiences and feelings during this period <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of extreme stress and fear. Changes in typical routines, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">such as school or social activities, may result in an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increase in stress and worry. There is an elevated level of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stress, worry, depression, and difficulties in controlling <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">emotions when their schedule keeps alternating. As a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">result of the pandemic, family tensions have escalated, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and parents have seen significant changes in their family <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dynamics, which can have a severe effect on their child\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mental health. Frequently, youngsters are anxious about <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the health of their parents and loved ones.
