Adjustment Disorder is an emotional or behavioural reaction to an identifiable stressor – such as a school change, parental divorce, relocation, bereavement, or medical diagnosis – that is more intense or prolonged than would typically be expected, and causes significant impairment. At Camali Clinic, we help children and young people process difficult life changes and develop healthy coping strategies.

Who Needs It

Children and adolescents who are struggling to cope following a specific stressful life event, and whose emotional or behavioural response is causing clear disruption to school, relationships, or family life – within 3 months of the onset of the stressor.

Adjustment Disorder Therapy

1. Symptoms may include

  • Depressed mood, tearfulness, or hopelessness in response to an identifiable stressor
  • Anxiety, worry, or nervousness related to the stressor
  • Behavioural changes – acting out, school refusal, withdrawal from social activitiesl
  • Difficulty functioning at school or home in a way that is clearly linked to the stressor
  • Brief, focused CBT – helping the child understand and process their reaction to the stressor and develop healthy coping skills
  • Supportive counselling and psychoeducation for child and family
  • Parent guidance – helping caregivers support the child through the transition
  • School liaison where academic difficulties or attendance issues are present
